Botox
INTRODUCTION TO
Botox
Injections of the botulinum toxin, also known as “Botox,” are a popular injectable, minimally-invasive treatment that temporarily minimizes or eliminates wrinkles and fine lines on the face. Botox injections stop specific chemical nerve signals from causing muscles to contract. These injections are most frequently used to:
- smoothing facial fine lines & wrinkles
- soften masseter (jaw) muscles
- reduce eye bags (crow’s feet)
- improve overall skin appearance
- upturn mouth corners
- relax protruding neck muscles
When it comes to aging, the face and neck are frequently regarded as the most visible areas that exhibit those tell-tale indications, as well as being among the most difficult to cure. As time goes by, the signs are harder and harder to conceal with makeup. Wrinkled necklines, which become more pronounced with age, can be a major source of anxiety for many people and cause serious self-image problems.
The injections are sometimes used to help with other issues too, notedly migraines, bladder dysfunction, eye twitching, and muscle contractions.
Consultation
Young to middle-aged people, or those between the ages of 18 and 70, may be suitable candidates for Botox treatment if they want to temporarily improve the look of frown lines, crow’s feet, or forehead lines.
During your initial consultation, our medical professionals will take into account your entire medical history (previous conditions, surgeries, treatments) and discuss with you your cosmetic goals and areas of concern. That way a course of treatment that corresponds to your needs will be given to you, that includes the prioritized areas to be treated, along with the best options, expected outcomes, Botox effects, and potential issues.
It is of paramount importance to us that you leave your consultation fully informed, prepared, and with a positive outlook about your upcoming treatment.
You will have to inform your physician if you have undergone a Botox treatment in the past four months or any other facial treatment, and what medications are currently on, as you will have to refrain from anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements for a few weeks before the treatment, which can promote bruising and bleeding. It will be also required to avoid drinking alcohol and smoking during that time frame.
Treatment
Botulinum toxin is injected in tiny doses by a very thin needle into selected muscles. Your healthcare professional preserves your natural facial expressions by selectively weakening only the muscles that cause wrinkles. No anesthesia is required for the treatment
to be performed.
The total treatment time ranges from 15 to 30 minutes, and the number of injections required depend on a variety of parameters, including the size of the area being treated. Botox injections are usually required to be repeated every three to four months.
Some changes will be noticeable within the first few days, and it will take a full week to see the full optimal results.
Recovery
Following treatment, there will be some bruising and swelling, but it will subside after 24 to 48 hours. You must avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas because doing so could lead to the botulinum toxin spreading to other parts of your face.
Patients can resume working or engage in other activities immediately after this nonsurgical procedure.
Risks
Botulinum toxin injections are common, and it is considered a safe procedure. However, some complications might always arise, depending on the case. These include:
- Infection
- Bruising
- Swelling
- Bleeding
- Headaches
- Pain
- Nausea
- Muscle weakness
- Eye tearing
